Magic City: The Complete Second Season

"No use cryin'"
Save MAGIC CITY! After two 8-episode seasons, the STARZ network decided to pull the plug on the Miramar Playa and all our friends inside. Are you kidding me?

Containing NC-17 sex, light-R violence, lush cinematography, killer acting and a loving, golden-oldie music-track, the saga of Ike "The Shark" Evans and Ben "The Butcher" Diamond is hands-down one of the greatest gangster-dramas ever. No kidding. Hell, they even got James Caan on-board. Give it up for Mitch Glazer, the Miami native who created this sparkling period-piece of sun, skin, sin, betrayal and blood. Let's all say it together: THE SHOW MUST GO ON!

The Lords of Salem [Blu-ray]

"The Evil Within"
I've read so much hate and disgust for Rob Zombies newest film "The Lords Of Salem" that I've been eagerly awaiting to see it myself not just because I love Robs work but also to see what all the fuss is about. It is an evil as hell horror movie if you allow yourself to get sucked into what is happening in the film, not as a fan or critic but just as someone experiencing a piece of art that is meant to leave you in awe. I feel that the lords is a true horror film that is definitely outside of the box and range of casual mainstream horror movie goer. It's root are deep in horror and deals with something that can truly be horrifying, Witchcraft and The Devil.

Of course this isn't a film for everyone, someone looking for another gore fest or cookie cutter teeny bopper horror film should look else where as "The Lords of Salem" is a horror film that stands out from the norm in every way possible and delivers itself as a true horror experience.

All these websites,...
all hail the lords!
went and caught a late showing of lords of salem the other night, and i was rewarded for my efforts, as I absolutely adored it. there were five other people in the theater, which kind of surprised me, and two of them left mid way through. I think that kind of sums up how esoteric a movie it was, and I'm amazed something so specific and particular can still get made. it was disturbing, beautiful, blasphemous, and, strangely, it left me feeling kind of upbeat.

the story is basically about immolated witches using what looked like a 78 rpm record in the present time to crack the doorway open for their return via the descendants of their executors. the vehicle for their musical transmission is local salem deejay Heidi hawthorne, played by sheri moon zombie, who really does a nice job, i thought. not perfect, but alternately energetic and morose, and always working hard. in her alone moments, i thought she was most effective, conveying simultaneously what recovering from...
Rob Zombie's best film to date.
This film is proving to be a divisive one among critics and fans, but that's to be expected coming from Rob Zombie. If you like his other movies, I'd wager you'll like this one as well. If you are not a fan of Rob Zombie, there's less chance you'll enjoy this, however I'd recommend still giving it a try and not dismissing it outright. When he's in top form (Devil's Rejects) Mr. Zombie can craft unique, high energy works; when he's not in top form (Halloween 2) his work can tend to be self-indulgent, weird for weirdness' sake and needlessly vulgar. Nevertheless, as hit-or-miss as he is, I find it impossible not to love Rob Zombie, due to the clear passion he has for his work, his desire to make something unique, and his obvious respect and love for horror films of all eras.

I'd say this film represents Zombie at his best; he's created a fascinating, horrifying, uniquely creepy ride full of grisly imagery that will embed itself in your brain and stay there long after the film...

Shanghai Calling

An Enjoyable Way to Pass Two Hours
SHANGHAI CALLING is an entertaining "fish-out-of-water" romantic comedy, an American-Chinese co-production.

Daniel Henney plays a hotshot young Chinese-American attorney, born and bred in New York City. Hoping to make partner after winning a major case for his law firm, he is, instead, sent to Shanghai where he doesn't speak the language, nor is he comfortable with the culture. It also appears that he is about to blow a billion dollar deal for a major client of his firm.

Written and directed by Daniel Hsia, SHANGHAI CALLING has a likeable cast, which includes Eliza Coupe, Alan Ruck and Bill Paxton, as well as several amusing sequences. However, watching the film, I couldn't help thinking that it could have been much better had it not been a Chinese-American co-production.

Before I create an international incident, I should explain.

First, much of the dialogue in the movie is in Chinese, which is okay, but the subtitles are so small and...
New look at new China
As my wife and I watched this movie we realized how little we knew about modern China. By the end of the movie we also realized that people are people, both for good and not. Great characters and humor. Hint, by the end of the movie you will be cheering for the common, friendly Chinese. Loved it and will add it to our video library.
Cute movie
This was a funny movie. Very amusing. Asian American who is very American gets sent to Shanghai to work, and he didn't want to go.

Halloween (35th Anniversary Edition) [Blu-ray]

A Comparison Between Halloween's Two Most Popular DVD Versions
Halloween. What a perfect title for a Horror movie. It's hard to believe back in 1977 that there had never been any movie, let alone a Horror film, that incorporated that title. And what good usage it got. Written, directed, and even musically scored by John Carpenter (with great assistance by then girlfriend Debra Hill), this was truly a film that brought Horror to it's roots, leaving an impact that only George Romero's Night Of The Living Dead did ten years earlier. Showcasing a deranged killer by the name of Michael Myers who in childhood murdered his sister in cold blood on Halloween night, only to escape his asylum to return to his Illinois home to hunt down babysitter (and eventually known little sister) Jamie Lee Curtis 15 years later, was truly an amazing film that never exploited the genre, keeping the imagination and terror flowing within the viewers mind rather than blatantly on the screen. For it's time it was the number one profitable independent film ever made, and after...
A Great, Scary, Classic Made Even Better!
This new, Extended version of Halloween is something no fan should be without! 12 minutes of additional footage (4 scenes) has been put into the original version, and the result is awesome. These scenes were not deleted. They were really shot in 1980, when the film was released on cut TV. The scenes were shot using the cast and crew of Halloween II (another must see!) and directed by John Carpenter, himself. These scenes include:

#1 A very well made scene where Dr. Loomis (Doneld Pleasance) has an intense conversation with two sanitarium officials. He begs that they move Myers to a maximum security ward, saying that the boy is dangerous and has an instinctive forsce within him. The officials are unimpressed by what Loomis says, and simply keep Myers in the minimum security ward.

#2 A scene directly following the previous added scene. Loomis walks into young Michael's cell. For about 1 minute he simply stares at the boy, who stares out the window. Loomis then says...
An Absolute Classic
The original Halloween is one of the greatest horror movies of all time and my personal favorite. Even though I've seen it numerous times I can't get enough. On Halloween night in 1963, six year old Michael Myers brutally murdered his sister in the small town of Haddonfield Illinois. Now, 15 years later, he has escaped from a mental institution to reek havoc amongst the trick or treaters. Jaime Lee Curtis stars in her first role as Laurie Strode and is pursued by Michael Myers throughout the entire movie. Donald Pleasance plays Dr. Sam Loomis (Michael Myers doctor) and warns Haddonfield Police of Michael's return. Hesitant to believe the wild accusation Dr. Loomis must hunt Michael down before he can do anymore harm. Halloween will scare and delight you at the same time. The music score for Halloween is still creepy almost 25 years later and is synonymous with the movie. If you only see one horror movie in your lifetime, see this absolute classic, Halloween.
